Memories of World War 2 | Photos from my Grandfather

There are so many stories from World War 2, these photos are part of the memories I have of my grandfather | Lieutenant-Commander George Evershed.

With D-Day coming up and our team working hard to get Victory At Sea ready, it becomes clear the people we miss most at this time. What we wouldn’t give to have our granddads here to advise us! I know they would love to be involved and could fill in some of the gaps as people who actually experienced the D-Day landings firsthand.

While both of my grandfathers were naval men in World War 2, my Granddad Carroll was never one for stories and didn’t particularly like his photo being taken. Whereas my Granddad Evershed lived quite the life at sea from all accounts!

Coming from a relatively privileged background he had the option of going into the Royal Navy as an Officer, however he was never one for using position as an advantage and insisted in going up through the ranks. He served aboard many ships in World War 2 including the HMS Clover, a Flower Class Corvette, as well as the HMS Botlea, HMS Columbine and the SS Umtali.

Of all the stories he told me, the one that stuck with me the most was his description of the D-Day landings. “The most awesome sight I have ever seen but one I hope you never have to experience.” From his description of the vast swarms of planes covering the sky, to the armada of ships surrounding him, I can’t imagine how utterly terrifying that moment must have been for the soldiers, sailors and airmen on all sides.

Not long after his Naval career was cut short through contracting TB and he spent a couple of years after the war in Africa recovering.

We felt the least we could do was add the HMS Clover into the game, so the Flower Class Corvette is among the many classes of ship (65 at last count) to be encountered and commanded in Victory At Sea. The clover may not be the biggest ship in game but with the Hedgehog it made it a formidable sub hunter!

The spirit of Victory At Sea

While we have made what is a World War 2 naval game, we are always conscious that Victory At Sea should be respectful to the spirit and courage that people showed at the time, most of them far younger than I am now.

Coming to Desktops (Mac Store & Steam) this summer and to mobile devices in the Autumn.
